Our Thoughts

The 8bit Sonic titles flew under most people's radar, and some might say unfairly so, as rather then merely being watered down clones of their 16bit brothers, they are very much their own games with their own little quirks and ways of doing things. Perhaps the most "out there" in terms of how closely it follows the formula is the 8bit edition of Sonic 2, which not only involves the first level being something other then the standard tropical greenery we've come to expect or a plot that involves you rescuing Tails rather then saving the world with him, but it is also considerably harder then most of the classic Sonic titles, almost bordering on sadistic towards the end of the game, and particularly within its third Acts, which feature absolutely no Rings to collect. Nonetheless, the difficulty curve isn't impossible to master, and if nothing else the game provides a decent challenge for anyone claiming to be a platformer master, and is noteworthy in part due to its discrepancies from other Sonic titles past and present alone.
