Grand Theft Auto III for PlayStation 2
This is it; the game that changed everything. Gone was the overhead view and relative distance from the criminal you were controlling; now it was all at-the-time ultramodern 3D graphics, set in a fully realised world where the grim nature of your character's situation- and his personality- were all up front for you to deeply immerse yourself in. Narrative was given a much greater focus this time, too, with cutscenes that clearly charted every step of your quest for revenge, glory, and debauchery. Grand Theft Auto III didn't simply reinvent the series for which it is a part of- an effect that is still being felt now, all these years later- it redefined gaming as a whole by showing what was possible, in terms of both technology and the pushing of taste. It is, without question, one of the most imporant games to have ever been made- and considering it's one wherein you can nick cars and shoot up the general public, that's quite an achievement.
