If you can feel the sunshine, it could be because it’s summer. It could also be, however, Sonic R working that Traveller’s Tales magic. Following the tired but true Mario spinoff formula “because why not”, Sonic and his friends (and also Robotnik, for some reason) have decided to have a good old fashioned race off over a whopping total of five courses, all of which feature alternate routes and hidden secrets, up to and including the legendary Chaos Emeralds. Ah, but that isn’t all the excitement to be had; Sonic R allows you to select a variety of weather conditions across every course, there are five additional characters to unlock, and the (in)famous euro house soundtrack provided by Richard Jacques comes in both instrumental and fully vocal form, featuring vocals by singer T.J. Davis. Sonic R has gained a bit of a reputation among the fanbase, but it still has its dedicated fans and certainly provides some entertainment value to even the most die hard Sonic and/or racing game fan, and it remains something of an oft forgotten curiosity in a series known for having a few oft forgotten curiosities.
