    Our Thoughts

Though more known these days for The Sims, Maxis’ original claim to fame was their series of innovative- and highly playable- city management simulations, of which SimCity 3000 was the third major instalment. As expected of a sequel, it comes with upgrades in the graphical department and a much tighter gameplay engine, but the differences between it and it’s predecessors is far from skin deep; the two major additions to gameplay are the further expansion of the Neighbouring Cities concept, including rudimentary business deals with other Mayors regarding the sale and distribution of things like water and electricity, and the concept of Waste Management, a brand new feature that requires the player to deal with waste that -begins to accumulate in the city once it reaches medium size. Smaller additions that buffer out the experience include a greatly expanded Land Value mechanic that factors in socio-economic factors, creating distinct ‘districts’ such as Wealthy, Middle Class and Slums in the process, manually having to manage (and sometimes replace) Power Plant structures, the introduction of Farming and Agriculture structures that can be built in light industrial areas with little pollution output, and Business Deal structures such as Maximum Security Prisons that can give the player substantial funds at the cost of lowering the land value around them.
