Heavy Rain for PlayStation 3
For many years now, the argument as to whether or not games count as art has been wildly debated across forum threat and within the printed press; however, if any game can be credited as changing the perception of the naysayers, it’s probably Heavy Rain. Directed and written by David Cage, Heavy Rain is a psychological crime thriller centring around a devious serial killer known as the Origami Killer. Ethan Mars- a man no stranger to tragedy and loss- is horrified to discover his son has been kidnapped after he experienced a sudden black out, and all signs point to the Origami Killer being the perpetrator. Having already lost one son in the past, Ethan is determined to get him back, even if he must turn his sights inward and battle some of his own demons to do so- although the killer aims to make that task harder by way of cruel, sadistic moral trials lined up to push Ethan to his limits. Structured similarly to a visual novel, gameplay sees players switching between four protagonists and progressing through the title via conversations with other characters, with the choices the player makes shaping the resulting experience.
