Our Thoughts

Starting life as an early concept for a Resident Evil sequel, Devil May Cry still holds up as the first in a still somewhat unique series of 3D action brawlers with an impeccably stylish execution, that favours the chaining of complex combos mapped to multiple different weapons and styles, little touches like an alternative Devil Trigger that gives you extra power (and extra moves based on which of the two additional non-firearm weapons you have equipped), and a presentation that favours a particular flavour of "cool" above all else, with a gritty visual style, some interesting enemy designs, a soundtrack that mixes rock with sample-heavy breakbeat in a really unique manner, all the way down to little things like Dante's entire all-edge-no-surface attitude. With a learning curve that favours mastery but doesn't alienate beginners, Devil May Cry still offers players an experience comparable to nothing else.
